Advisory Committee

 

meeting to be held on September 17, 2015, commencing at 4:03 PM, in Committee Room #5, Second Floor, London City Hall. 

 

PRESENT:  C. Callander (Chair), F. Bivens, F. Cassar, Z. Hashami, S. Lewkowitz, S. Morrison, A. Sanchez and I. Silver  and J. Martin (Secretary). 

 

ABSENT: L. Hernadez and L. Osbourne.

 

ALSO PRESENT:  Chief Pare, Deputy Chief Williams and Deputy Chief Longworth; T. Allott, S. Amri, F. Andrighetti, J. Hill, K. Husain and S. Middleton.

CALL TO ORDER

Disclosures of Pecuniary Interest

 

That it BE NOTED that no pecuniary interests were disclosed.

Police Check Practices

 

That it BE NOTED that a verbal presentation from Chief Pare with respect to police check practices and experience in London, was received; it being noted that the London Police Services offered to provide an update to the LDRRAC following the completion of the police check practices review.

SUB-COMMITTEES & WORKING GROUPS

 

3.

Policy and Planning Sub-Committee

 

That the minutes of the Policy and Planning sub-committee from its meeting held on September 3, 2015, BE RECEIVED; it being noted that the London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee (LDRRAC) approved expenditures of up to $150.00 with respect to the Public Participation Meeting to be held October 15, 2015; it being further noted that the LDRRAC has sufficient funds in its 2015 budget for these expenditures.

Awards and Recognition Sub-Committee

 

That the minutes of the Awards and Recognition sub-committee from its meeting held on August 31, 2015, BE RECEIVED; it being noted that the London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee (LDRRAC) approved revised expenditures of up to $1,000.00 with respect to the London Diversity, Race Relations and Inclusivity Award and Recognition Celebration; it being further noted that the LDRRAC has sufficient funds in its 2015 budget for these expenditures.

Education Sub-Committee

 

That it BE NOTED that a verbal update from I. Silver with respect to the Education sub-committee, was received.

7th Report of the London Diversity & Race Relations Advisory Committee

 

That it BE NOTED that 7th Report of the London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee, from its meeting held on August 20, 2015, was received.

VI.

DEFERRED MATTERS/ADDITIONAL BUSINESS

 

7.

Advancing Equality and Inclusion - A Guide for Municipalities

 

That Civic Administration BE REQUESTED to consider the Advancing Equality and Inclusion – A Guide for Municipalities (City for All Women Initiative, Ottawa) in the preparation of the Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy; it being noted that consideration of this publication was deferred from the August 20, 2015 London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee meeting.

 

8.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission

 

That the following actions BE CONSIDERED, in conjunction with work already underway by the Civic Administration with respect to the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC):

 

a)           providing information to the London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee (LDRRAC), from the Civic Administration, with respect to the Civic Administration’s review of the TRC “calls to action”;

 

b)           developing Indigenous cultural competency training for all municipal employees;

 

c)           reviewing and potentially endorsing the attached United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); and,

 

d)           developing a prominent memorial in London, acknowledging the history of Canada’s residential school system and its former students;

 

it being noted that a verbal presentation was received from S. Morrison with respect to this matter which is further detailed at

9.

(Added) Racism In London

 

That the London Diversity and Race Relations Advisory Committee (LDRRAC) approved expenditures of up to $200.00 with respect to the proposed presentation by Eternity Martis, author of “Racism in London”, it being noted that the LDRRAC has sufficient funds in its 2015 budget for these expenditures.

 

10.

(Added) Mayor's Advisory Panel on Poverty

 

The Mayor BE REQUESTED to consider expanding the membership of the Advisory Panel on Poverty to include representatives of diverse populations that are disproportionately impacted by poverty; it being noted that the LDRRAC recognizes the value of the current membership of the Panel and supports the initiative taken by the Panel on this important matter.
