ANIMAL WELFARE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

 

meeting held on June 1, 2017, commencing at 5:04 PM, in Committee Room #4, Second Floor, London City Hall. 

 

PRESENT:     W. Brown (Chair), K. Ashe, H. de Hoog, V. Lightfoot, P. Lystar and M. Toplack and J. Martin (Secretary). 

 

ABSENT: M. Gelinas, M. Puzanov and D. Simpson.

 

ALSO PRESENT:  R. Oke.

 

I.	CALL TO ORDER

 

1.	Disclosures of Pecuniary Interest

 

              That it BE NOTED that no pecuniary interests were disclosed.

 

II.	SCHEDULED ITEMS

 

2.	5:05 PM - DELEGATION - C. Sheridan, Head Zookeeper and Facility Manager, Reptilian Zoo - Reptilia

 

              That it BE NOTED that a verbal presentation from C. Sheridan, Head Zookeeper and Facility Manager, Reptilia Zoo, with respect to Reptilia and future potential plans for expansion in Ontario, including London, was received; it being noted that the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) deferred additional discussion with respect to this matter to a future meeting of the AWAC.

3.	5th Report of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee

 

              That it BE NOTED that the 5th Report of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, from its meeting held on May 4, 2017, was received.

4.	Animal Welfare Advisory Committee Working Group

 

              None.

 

V.	ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION

 

5.	R. Oke, Animal Welfare Coordinator - Tufts Animal Care and Condition (TACC) Scale

 

              That it BE NOTED that the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) supports the use of the Tufts Animal Care and Condition Scale and the development of additional tools, such as door hangers and brochures by the City, as proactive measures in the promotion and education of the health and welfare of outdoor dogs; it being noted that the AWAC received a communication from R. Oke, Animal Welfare Coordinator, with respect to this matter. 

 

6.	W. Brown - Urban Agriculture

 

That it BE NOTED that the draft London Urban Agriculture Strategy was referred to the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) Working Group to review and finalize recommendations for submission to the Advisory Committee of the Environment with respect to this matter. 

 

7.        (Added) Letter of Resignation – J. Sukhdeo

 

              That it BE NOTED that a communication, dated May 30, 2017, from J. Sukhdeo, with respect to his resignation from the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, was received.
